When I carefully consider the curious habits of dogs


I am compelled to conclude


That man is the superior animal.





When I consider the curious habits of man


I confess, my friend, I am puzzled.

As cool as the pale wet leaves


of lily-of-the-valley


She lay beside me in the dawn.

Can anyone give their interpretations on these two poems by Ezra Pound?asap?
the poem from Meditatio says that when he watches dogs he discovered that humans are way smarter, but how the human acts sometimes makes him confused

it just says that humans can be really retarded on how they act

i think just talks about how we(humans) and animals after all arent so different.

Lilies arent usually found in valleys..and if found in a valley it serves as a nourishment to those in the valleyy.


so in that wise, i guess its talking about how his spouse brings calm to his heart.

Reply:the first poem is very tongue-in-cheek. it means that although the poet thinks himself superior to an animal such as a dog, he does not understand why he thinks humans superior, for some of their bad habits are worse than those of dogs.





Second poem: %26#039;Alba%26#039; means the color white. white is a color we associate as %26#039;cool%26#039;. ice... snow... a skating rink, etc. All the poem says is that the woman who lay next to him, was cool skinned. it%26#039;s not a deep poem, just a whimsy.





by the way... i feel like I%26#039;m doing your homework for you -- if so, go do your own homework... if not, if you truly are interested in poetry, then consider my opinion on the 2 poems above..

Reply:Meditatio- I would agree that the interpretation is that in comparisson to dogs he sees Humans curious habits as much more superior. As to when he examines humans curious habits as to their merit he does not understand where they come from or how they tie together because of mans freedom.








Alba- I think this could be a little bit of a whimsey but I think what it is saying could be that she is not someone who loves him but is laying next to him. Or that she tranquil and laying next to him. I think you could look at it either way at first the not loving him made more sense to me but it is up to you.
